10 YEARS TODAY

It is “Throw Back Thursday” and exactly 10 years today that I graduated from Chiropractic College. From the time I started college to finishing with my doctorate was also 10 years.

It is very clear that decades go on in the blink of an eye and it truly is important to take each day lightly and have fun. I have had so many incredible experiences and memories, and have learned so much in this past decade.

In the last 10 year:

I graduated from Chiropractic College with these great guys and loaded up my things and moved home to Fenton, MI.

I moved in with my parents, moved into an apartment, bought a condo and bought a home.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan Graduation 12 18 04

I started a practice, Cafe of LIFE Chiropractic at 110 Trealout Dr, moved my practice to 114 W. Caroline Street (where Crust is currently) and we found permanent digs in 2010 at 521 N. Leroy St.

I have celebrated the marriage of my mother to my step dad, and 2 of my brothers to 2 very beautiful women.

I have welcomed 4 nieces and 3 nephews, and watched my brothers become fathers.

I have been to countless birthday parties, holiday parties and spent hundreds of hours at the lake with my family.

I have had 5 extraordinary women help me run my practice…Thank you Lauren, Rachel, Vickie, Angie and Alyssa.

I have had 7 of the greatest massage therapists on my team…Thank you Rachel, Teri, Kelli, Rachael, Toni, Kel Leigh and Nicole.

I have traveled a lot and have some fun stamps on my passport.

I have participated in a Chiropractic Service Trip <<–YouTube picture book (Peru August 2014).

I have run a marathon, Chicago in 2006, many half-marathons, Crim 10 milers and other races.

I have finished 4 triathlons.

I have been to hundreds of yoga classes, maybe close to a thousand.

I took yoga teacher training and doula training.

I have been in love, been loved and fallen out of love.

I have done a FLASH MOB, jumped out of an AIRPLANE and taken a ride in a helicopter.

I have had health challenges, sports injuries and have more faith in the body’s ability to heal than ever before.

I have attended births, I adjusted women before labor, during labor and immediately after birthing their babies.

I have checked and adjusted too many babies to count, more kids than I can imagine, and I can’t even fathom how many adults.

I have adjusted people minutes after birth and hours prior to death, and those who have just lost someone important.

I have laughed more in the last 10 years than ever before in my life.

I have had more fun than ever before in my life.

I have cried so many tears of joy and sorrow.

I have never loved life so much as I do at this point right now.

I have made so many great friends, lost a few and learned so much from connections with others.

I have learned to embrace the moment, be present to the day and squeeze as much juice out of life as I possibly can.

I am so grateful, so very very grateful to be of service to a community that has given me so much.

I am so freakin’ grateful for my support system of people near and far and grateful to have people in my life that help me keep my flame lit.

I had no idea when that picture above was taken at my graduation that all of this stuff would have happened.

It has been quite a ride, I look forward to seeing what the next 10 years will bring.

10 years today. Truly unbelievable it has been 10.

AM I READY

In the chilling 30 degree wind, dodging rain drops and snow flakes, I learned something HUGE at the Michigan State vs. Ohio State football game last weekend. It begs me to start asking the question “Am I ready?” in my life on a regular basis.

If you know anything about either football team, they are both really good. My team, the Spartans, have finally put an excellent, high-quality team together after all these years and everyone knows that Ohio State is good and has been that way for a long, long time.

The teams came together at Spartan Stadium a week ago.  The anticipation surrounding that game was intense…everyone talking about it, looking forward to it, trash talking the other team, the whole thing.  It was probably one of the most highly anticipated games of the season in this region.Fenton Chiropractor MSU

If Ohio State beat my team, it really put the Spartans in a tough place.  After the previous season and a huge Rose Bowl win, this particular loss meant no playoffs at all and no big bowl game.

And that is exactly what happened.

I have to say that the better team won and I made an interesting observation while I was freezing my behind off sitting in the stands that night.

When Michigan State is up, they are up.  But when something goes wrong, they start moping around the field.

Sometime in the 2nd quarter there was a bad call by the refs.  With that bad call was our first unanswered touchdown drive.  Then, a missed field goal.  Coming out of that drive, Ohio State regains possession and you can see the mope happening in our team.  The mope of the players on the field begins this domino effect of the mope of the crowd in the stands.  It is as though the wind has been stripped out of our sails and all is doomed.  That may sound exaggerated but truly that is what it feels like to be in the stands.  The only hope for lifting energy in those moments is our fantastic marching band, but that only goes so far.

On the other hand, if Ohio State made a bad play, and there was a fumble and a few other turnovers, they stay on their horses and get right back out there.  They are ready every single time they get on the field and I can feel that from the stands.

One way this shows up as the game goes on is when the players take the field and get out to their starting positions, Ohio State players run/jog with enthusiasm all the way to their starting point.  Michigan State players take to the field with a jog, and if this start follows a play that didn’t go their way, they slow to a walk and take their starting positions.

Energetically this feels like OSU players are ready, really ready for whatever happens next.  Michigan State players are flat, they are settled into the ground, heavy and seem like they are hoping and praying for luck to turn in their favor.  Quite frankly, games are not won on luck alone.  I am not saying they truly are banking on luck, but that is what it feels like.  If the last play ended in their favor, they have a spunk to their step.   It is a pendulum that swings good and bad, high and flat, all game long and has for years.  …and the entire crowd in the stadium follows that lead.

It takes readiness and opportunity to win this college football game, but also the game of life.   When readiness isn’t there, opportunity is missed.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan Am I Ready

So let me ask you, have you ever shown up with “flat” energy to a meeting for work?  Have you shown up with “flat” energy to the gym?  Have you ever shown up flat and moping for your shower in the morning?  I know for me, when I show up with flat energy to the gym or even for my morning shower, it takes exceptionally more energy to get moving than if I energetically jog up to my starting point.

People often ask me about my office and how we work so efficiently and handle serving people so easily.  I never realized it but unconsciously when I walk in the doors of Cafe of LIFE Chiropractic, I energetically jog.  My whole staff does this. The first person on my table is usually ready and waiting for me.  I don’t physically jog up to the table, but that is exactly where I am energetically.

Do I always feel like it?  No, however if I do it whether I feel like it or not, I start to take on that readiness feeling, it takes over my being, and I am able to serve from that place regardless of what was happening just minutes prior.

This also happens in my workouts.  Sometimes I just do not feel like moving.  If I can get to the place that I planned my workout, whether that be the gym, yoga studio or outdoor trail somewhere, and I can find it in me to jog into my starting position, everything gets easier from there.

How are you showing up?

Regardless of the awareness OSU’s team brought to me, by no means am I wanting you to become a Ohio State fan, we all know better than that!  What I would like to suggest is taking a moment in the morning and asking yourself “Am I ready?”.  Take a moment to notice what pace you are approaching your starting position.  Are you flat and moping into your starting position or are you jogging right up to that place?  If you can see that mope I have talked about above, make a shift, pick up your pace, lift up your chest.  No matter if the last play worked for you or against you, be ready.  Readiness wins games and I am thoroughly convinced it plays a HUGE role in the game of life as well.

GRATITUDE

The month of November is such a great time to bring our focus back to gratitude.
We have a gratitude project happening at Cafe of LIFE Chiropractic this month. There is a gratitude station set up in the reception area and every time you come in, we are asking you take a moment and think of something you are grateful for. It could be something really big or super small. It could be something from today, or something from years ago. Absolutely anything you are grateful for, write it down on a leaf and we have a “gratitude tree” painted on our big windows that you can tape it to.
The only other thing we ask is that you take an extra moment, maybe 5 or 10 seconds to consider what it is that you are grateful for.

It is one of our favorite activities of the year, literally planting seeds of gratitude in our reception area that grow and flourish.  I have to say, honestly, day after day after day of that really builds some incredible energy.  With the Thanksgiving holiday right around the corner, what perfect timing!!!
We have had some teachers come in and borrow that idea to take it back to their classroom. I actually got the idea from a friend of mine who did it on their window at home and allowed the entire family to participate.
What are you grateful for?
One Monday, one women said “I have so much to be grateful for, how can I pick just one?”
Take a moment every single day for gratitude. Truly we are blessed beyond what words could express if we really take a good look.
While we are on this topic, I would like to express my gratitude to you for being in my life. If you are part of my practice, part of my family, part my circle of friends, a colleague, someone who is following this blog or a perfect stranger that has stumbled upon this post by chance, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! When I count my blessings, you are one of them and I want to take a moment to express my gratitude.

THAT’S INCREDIBLE!

The most incredible thing is happening today and I am positive by the end of this post, you will be saying “THAT’S INCREDIBLE!” too!

Many of you remember the post I made about My First Best Friend back in April.  My cousin, Danielle, who also happens to be my very first best friend in my life, her husband had a sudden brain bleed.  At the moment it happened, it was beyond belief, “things like that don’t happen to people I know” was my initial thought.

But it really did happen and it has changed the course of their lives forever.

You may have remembered a couple months after that initial post, I wanted to give you an update of their status, and posted A Smile.

Today, this morning, 6 months and 2 weeks to the day…Scott is coming home.  THAT’S INCREDIBLE!!!!Fenton Chiropractor Incredible

They have transferred to many different places and for the past few months have been over in Grand Rapids, a little too far for me to travel regularly to visit with them.  I have done what I could to let her know I am here with her every step of the way, and mostly through text message.  Although text seems impersonal at times, I know their days are filled with therapies and when she was not there with him, she was driving back home to Durand daily to take care of her home and her boys.

Here is a little snippet of the past 6 months between her and I.

Me:  “Sending you love.  How are you guys doing?”
Danielle:  “I am hanging in there.  It has been tough but I know he is going to come through this.”

Danielle:  “He started moving his hands and playing with my wedding ring today!”
Me:  “Awesome!  THAT’S INCREDIBLE!!”

Danielle:  “He is blinking his eyes and seems to be able to focus on things.”
Me:  “Good.  I am so relieved.  THAT’S TRULY INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “I finally got him to smile.  It was the most wonderful thing I have ever seen…”
Me:  “Wow!  That is totally awesome!!”

Danielle:  “He mouthed ‘I love you’ to me when I left today.”
Me:  “Oh my goodness!  THAT’S INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “He was able to speak some words out loud today.”
Me:  “Wow!  THAT’S INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “His memory is good and improving every day.”
Me:  “That guy is amazing!  THAT’S SO INCREDIBLE!!”

Danielle:  “He held an instrument and started to play some chords today.”
Me:  “THAT”S FREAKIN’ INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “He was able to eat solid foods today.”
Me:  “THAT’S INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “We got to go on a drive today.”
Me:  “I bet that was amazing.  So INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “He is being accepted to a program that only takes success cases.  They expect complete recovery.”
Me:  “OH MY GOODNESS!!!  THAT”S INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “He stood up today.  I almost forgot how tall he is.”
Me:  “THAT”S INCREDIBLE.”

Danielle:  “He is walking with a walker today.”
Me:  “THAT”S INCREDIBLE!”

Danielle:  “He is walking on his own with minor assistance.”
Me:  “UNBELIEVABLE!!!  THAT”S INCREDIBLE.”

Danielle:  “We got a release date for him to finally come home!!!”
Me:  “Holy cow!!!  That guy is AMAZING!!!  THAT”S INCREDIBLE!!!!”

When I would respond to all of these things that he was able to gain back after losing everything, my usual response truly was, “THAT’S INCREDIBLE!” because it was and is.  She would always reply back to me with “Yes, he is truly remarkable.”  or “Yes, he is just incredible.”

Every bit of the recovery he has made has been incredible.  When doctors change their tone from “he is not going to make it” one day, to “Wow!  We didn’t expect that to happen!” and “He is not doing what we normally expect in this situation.” the very next day…it was incredible.

It is not over, their journey is still going to be long and winding and there is a lot of work to do.  He has come so far but please keep praying and sending healing thoughts towards them.  She is an angel and deserves a lot of credit.  I have never seen anyone love so much, push so hard, encourage so much, learn so much, fight for someone, support so gracefully, get so involved and be so strong.  She has a gift.  She is a gift.  He is a gift.  And the love that exists between those two is a gift to this world.  It truly is incredible!

GET BUSY ENJOYING LIFE

As the seasons tick by and we head into this beautiful Michigan fall, I want to remind you that we all need to get busy enjoying life.  It is going so fast!!

I recently came across this powerful writing and I wanted to share it with you as it seems to fit the mood perfectly.

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER

by IRMA BOMBECK (on her death bed from a terminal illness)

” I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for a day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.Fenton Chiropractor Life Life Over

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten popcorn in the “good” living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light the fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later.  Now go get washed up for dinner.”  There would have been more “I love you’s.”  More “I’m sorry’s.”

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute…look at it and really see it…live it and never give it back.  Stop sweating the small stuff.

Don’t worry about who doesn’t like you, who has more, or who’s doing what.

Instead, let’s cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.

Let’s think about what God HAS blessed us with.  And what we are doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally.  I hope you all have a blessed day.”

There are some fun things, some simple things and some things to really think about in that list above.  What an awesome time to bring to our awareness to how sweet and simple life really is.

With such a beautiful week, it is easy to want to get outside and enjoy the days.  Even when it is cold, gray and yucky out, we can still find a little bit of sweetness inside of each day.  Let’s all get busy enjoying life!

PAY IT FORWARD

We have one of the greatest “Pay it Forward” campaigns going on in and around my town but spreading far and wide.

Nash Schupbach lived a way too short 5 months.  The grief and pain of losing a child is, as everyone can imagine, incomprehensible.  A very sweet family here in town has had to endure the loss of their sweet smiling little Fenton Chiropractor Nash Daybundle of joy.  Shelly, Nash’s mom, has a blog (caffreshe.wordpress.com) that she has been gracefully sharing her story.  Not many would have the strength to share the details of such an event.  I commend her for talking about something that people do not talk about.  I have been following them throughout their journey.  Todd, Nash’s dad, is one of my youngest brother’s best friends.  Though I do not know Todd and Shelly well, this story is a little too close for comfort.

What this family has done with their grief is absolutely astounding.  They have taken their long tear-filled days and exchanged them for heading out into the community to spread random acts of kindness.  I think it was just a day or 2 following the funeral, Shelly went out into the streets of our precious town and stopped people to give them flowers and other small things just Fenton Chiropractor Nash Day Augustto spread smiles around.

These small gestures of kindness caught on like wildfire and newspapers, television and other media picked up and shared their story.

“What we give, we get.”

This did not put an end to the grieving of their sweet little boy, but it gave a new purpose and increased awareness in and around our little community…and has spread to different parts of the country and trickled out around the world.  We are lucky to have these kinds of people in our community.

Nash was born on the January 9th of this year.  They have made the 9th of each month a day for random acts of kindness.  I just love that idea and am hoping after you read this, you think of the 9th a little more sweetly.

“Have a Nash Day!!” is a line that has caught up with this movement.  To have a “Nash Day” means to spread a smile a little further than what you would usually do and smile a little bit more yourself.  It means to go out of your way to make a loved one or a stranger smile; someone already in your life or someone you simply pass on the street.Fenton Chiropractor Nash Day September

One month ago, I was at Machu Picchu on this day.  I was traveling with one of my team members that I served with on my Chiropractic Mission Trip to Peru (clicking RIGHT HERE will take you to a slideshow of the trip) I was trying to figure out how to do a complete random act of kindness but I also don’t speak the language (so many different nationalities visit Machu Picchu) and couldn’t come up with how to express the story to a stranger. So I bought a bus ticket for my teammate, Dr. John for Nash Day in August and added a smile to his day.

Today, as I am writing this, we are having a Nash Day at my chiropractic office Cafe of LIFE.  For the first 20 people that come in for their adjustments today, we are doing scratch-off tickets from the Michigan Lottery.  Just for fun.  Just because scratch-off tickets are fun and make people smile.

So get out there and Pay It Forward!  Something big, something small, even just a smile and a free hug…spread a big of kindness into your day today and Have a Nash Day!!!

PICTURES

I have been home for a couple weeks now and am settled in from my chiropractic service trip to Peru.  I have done my best to explain the experience in words as people have asked, however I think pictures tell the best stories.  I have put together a slideshow with a little bit from each day of the trip.  Just wanted to be able to share in this format so far.

I have spent the past few weeks digesting the trip and some of the life lessons that are involved in serving others in this capacity.  I will be sharing more and more as the weeks go on.

The entire trip was filled with beautiful moments, scenery and connections…for now, please enjoy these pictures.

WELL ADJUSTED SCHOOL

I was on my way up to the top of a mountain with 2 other doctors when I was pulled from the car

to go serve in a school with 720 children.  I am here to serve and will go where I am needed and

WOW!!! what awesome opportunities!!!  Can you imagine a well adjusted school, much less a well

adjusted elementary school?  What a concept, huh?Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 9

When the children see us with our tables, they do not know exactly what is going to happen,

but they can tell they are in for a treat.  We were given the room above and the children

piled in and filled up the seats and each took their turn.

I adjust a lot of children at the Cafe of LIFE and one of the things it really helps

with is when children are stuck on the “gas pedal” in their bodies.  They run and

run and run and run, and are just being children.  Some can become sometimes

difficult to manage and often times that is when they are stuck in “gas pedal” mode.  Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 13

Chiropractic care helps get off the “gas pedal” and apply some brakes.  Getting adjustments helps them to find a better balance in their entire body thus improving their quality of life, as well as those around them.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 15

This morning at the school, Dr. Austin and I were going to go it together.  We adjusted non-stop for a couple hours and then as Dr. Haley was finishing with her community in the upper elevations, the driver dropped her off with us.  I have to say we were relieved to have another set of hands willing to serve.

I would be interested to know how the afternoon at the school went after everyone got checked this morning…including the teachers!!!  The concept of a well adjusted school seems like it would be a dream come true for the education system.  Anywhere.

RAW

As I laid “boca abajo” or face down on the table to get my own spine checked this afternoon, my heart, which had swelled to triple its normal size today, burst wide open. My teammate noticed my tears and asked “are you alright?” The best I could describe to him was “I am just raw”.

I am not sure which was more significant to me today:
1) Being invited to set up an “office” on someone’s lawn and share space with their chickens.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 1

2) The little boy who was being dragged by the arm to get adjusted, who refused but hung out for 3 hours and watched, and then finally got on the table completely open and ready to have his spine checked.
3) The Quechua village women who all got adjusted and then sat as the rest of the village showed up and helped them understand how to go about the process of getting their spines checked.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 2
4) Checking and adjusting an infant dressed in layers of beautiful wool as he breastfed in his mother’s lap.
Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 35) Serving side by side with one of the most incredible women I know.
Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 46) Being stopped on the road and invited right into someone’s dirt floor home to set up our tables and serve their community because they caught wind that there were chiropractors in our car as we drove by.  Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 5
7) The intense dirt road drive up this mountain along side 500 foot drop offs and not guard rails.
8) The beautiful travel nurse that understands chiropractic care and educates these communities when we show up.  A special shout out to our driver that chose to carry our tables for us, take pictures and help the people understand what we were doing and how to participate.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 8

9) The huge language barrier we were dealing with as neither of us speak Quechuan, but realizing a smile and laughter is a universal language.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 6

10) The roaring laughter as these communities were lit up and a chance to be a small part of their lives.
We have documented our day well and without these pictures, you would never truly be able to grasp the extent of it all. Truly a blessing.
When serving like this, all the “stuff” is stripped away. The documentation, monetary exchange, health insurance coverage, the bills to run an office, the layers and layers of things that are required to run a successful office in the country where we live. And then when you no longer have language to communicate…it becomes raw. It is a  deep look into beautiful stranger”s eyes, a soul to soul connection, a smile and the purest intention to give, love and serve from a deep, abundant well inside of me. It is the most beautiful thing I know of in this entire world.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 7

PERU

I am not sure I have been more excited about a trip in years and years.  You all know me, I travel a lot, so that is a pretty bold statement.  Yes, I have been to some really incredible places in my life, some of those very recently, but when I tap into this place inside I have for this trip coming up, it bubbles over.  I cannot wait to get to Peru.

Fenton Chiropractor Peru Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley

A friend of mine called a few months back.  She has been to Peru for the past few years and goes back every year to deliver chiropractic care, love and serve the people in the Sacred Valley.  She says, “You know, you should come with my team this year.”  I am beyond honored to even get an invite.

If you have followed this blog or know me at all, you know my core is absolutely driven by the desire to have “rich, rewarding experiences” in my lifetime.  My answer was “Yes!”…and I began to work on making that happen.

Thursday this week marks the beginning of what I anticipate being an adventure of a lifetime!

I fly Detroit to Atlanta to Lima to Cuzco in a 19 hour travel day.  I am chalking that up as part of the actual adventure, and truthfully that is probably the only way to get through it.

Fenton Chiropractor Peru
My Friend Adjusting a Child in a Past Year

We will be staying at high altitudes and serving at even higher, so the first few days will be time to acclimate and get situated as a team.  We will be serving Monday-Friday next week.  I will take a couple extra days to see Machu Picchu since it is quite close to there and then head back with another 20+ hour travel adventure to return to my home on the 12th.

As I stated before, I have done a tremendous amount of traveling, however, going some place to just be a tourist and visitor is completely different than integrating yourself into service mode in a community.  Don’t get me wrong, on every trip I have been on since getting my license almost 10 years ago, I have done some adjusting.  I even got paid in habanero hot sauce while helping some in Belize!!!

But this is different, very different.  My friend refers to this trip as “dropping love bombs”  (www.lovebombthemovie.com).  I so look forward to being part of that.

I couldn’t do this without all the great people back here taking care of my practice and my home and making sure the gears keep turning while I am away.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you.

I am grateful for my life.  I am grateful for the opportunities that come my way and I am grateful for the support that gives me the confidence to seize such opportunities.

Stay tuned for posts from Peru!
