Twenty-One Years – Still Loving It!

Twenty-one years.  Best Chiropractor Fenton Michigan - Dr Erica Peabody - Expansion

If you had told me when I first started that I would still feel excited to walk into the office two decades later, I’m not sure I would have believed you. Not because I didn’t love the profession—but because I didn’t yet understand what a long relationship with your work actually looks like.  I remember calling my Mom one day after my second year in to talk about “adulting” and “is this what you do as an adult?  You get up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, eat dinner to go to sleep and start all over again?”

Now I do understand.  And the truth is: I still enjoy it. Deeply.

That surprises some people. In a world where burnout gets talked about more than purpose, staying passionate about something for 21 years can sound unusual. But the longer I do this work, the more I realize the joy doesn’t come from the novelty of it.

It comes from the meaning of it and my response to my Mom was “At least I get to spend that time helping people.”

The Early Years

When I first started in practice, everything was new.Dr Erica Peabody - Best Chiropractor Fenton Michigan - In the Genes
Every patient felt like a big moment. Every success felt huge. Every challenge felt personal.

Just constantly learning;  about my craft, about people, about myself.

Those early years are fueled by adrenaline and determination; figuring out systems, finding a rhythm, learning what works and what doesn’t. There are long days and more than a few moments where I  wondered if you’re doing it right and doing it well.

But those years build the foundation for everything and teach resilience.  They teach patience, steadfastness, tenacity and endurance.  And most importantly—they teach you that this work is about helping the people.

Somewhere Along the Way

At some point, something shifts.  The work becomes less about performance and more about service and impact. You understand your process. You trust your experience. You know how to help people in ways that only come from years of doing it.Best Chiropractor Fenton Michigan - 3 Days In - Dr Erica Peabody (810)69-6023 - Grouchy

There’s a quiet confidence that replaces the feelings of the early years.  And that’s when the work becomes even more fulfilling.  Because you’re not just practicing anymore—you’re guiding, supporting, and witnessing people’s progress in ways that younger versions of myself as a doctor couldn’t fully appreciate yet.

The Real Reward

After 21 years, the greatest reward isn’t the longevity, it’s the relationships.  It’s the patient who has been coming in for years and now brings their kids.
It’s seeing someone who came in struggling walk out stronger and healthier.
It’s the conversations, the trust, the small wins that add up to real change in someone’s life.  It is the moments of joy and also sitting in deep grief as life moves around all of us.

Those moments never get old and they remind me why I chose this path in the first place.

What Keeps It Fresh

People sometimes ask how I stay motivated after so many years.  The answer is simple: no two days are the same and it is the very best part!  Every person who walks through the door brings a different story, a different challenge, a different opportunity to help. That variety keeps the work alive and I am always learning.

And honestly, after 21 years, I’m still learning;  about the body, about people and about how to do this work better every year.  The moment I think I’ve mastered everything is the moment I stop growing and if you know anything about me by this point, you know I never want that.

Perspective Changes Everything

Experience also brings perspective.  I’ve learned not to stress over the small things the way you used to. I’ve learned that tough days happen and that they pass and that consistency matters more than perfection.

Over and above all of that, I have learned to appreciate the privilege of doing work that matters.  This is not just a job and not just a career.  It’s a chance, every single day, to improve someone’s quality of life in a meaningful way.  Not everyone gets to say that about their career and it is something that makes me look ahead with excitement and optimism.

21 Years Later

So here I am, 21 years in.  Still grateful.  Still curious.  Still enjoying the work.  That doesn’t mean every day is perfect. No career works like that. But the bigger picture which is the impact, the relationships and the purpose, makes it worth showing up every morning.

And if the last 21 years have taught me anything, it’s this:  When you build a career around helping people, the work never really gets old.  It just gets more meaningful.

And honestly… I’m excited to see what the next chapter brings.

CRAWL FIRST

We all need to crawl first!
I get messages from my patients at Cafe of LIFE Chiropractic all the time. Lots of wonderful messages about healing and growth and clearing their lives and feeling better.
I saw a 9 month old girl yesterday and mom reported that she has been starting to stand up to furniture but hasn’t crawled yet. Some parents would be so ecstatic that they were standing but without crawling, its presents a Chiropractor Fenton Michigan - Crawl Firstchallenge. There are reasons why babies go from crawling to walking, it is a primitive developmental stage (the cross crawl movement is vital to so many other movements as well as neurological development) that leads to the next thing and to the next thing. Its stages, and normal development happens through those stages. When a child appears to be skipping a stage, it is concerning to me as a chiropractor.
So I checked her spine and nerve system and got her adjusted. I have been adjusting this little one since birth however more sporadic than anything and they had a busy summer and hadn’t made it in in the past 2 months.
This is mom’s text message to me this morning (yes some patients text me directly) “Just wanted to let you know that “L” is crawling around everywhere today!! …and getting on her brother’s nerves!!! Glad I finally brought her in, she obviously needed it.”
I did not push a “start crawling” button on little L, there is no such thing. I simply asked some questions, adjusted her spine as I normally I would for any child, and her body righted itself, got the nerves connected correctly and started crawling…apparently REALLY CRAWLING!!! For a child to go from stationary to crawling after her adjustment is an incredible shift in life. She is now ready to progress and will probably take off on foot very quickly.
This is not the first time I have seen this happen…many reports over the years but just finally had a moment to sit down and write this out for you.
Some people have a perception of chiropractic care is a “cure” for pain.  Was that 9 month old in my office for pain? Not even close. Using chiropractic for pain only is like using your iPhone to text message only. It is SOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!!!  It is about life and living and how the body is working and healing and growing and developing and handling the days.
It is about LIFE!!!
I am honored to be little L’s chiropractor. I wouldn’t have my life be any other way.

RAW

As I laid “boca abajo” or face down on the table to get my own spine checked this afternoon, my heart, which had swelled to triple its normal size today, burst wide open. My teammate noticed my tears and asked “are you alright?” The best I could describe to him was “I am just raw”.

I am not sure which was more significant to me today:
1) Being invited to set up an “office” on someone’s lawn and share space with their chickens.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 1

2) The little boy who was being dragged by the arm to get adjusted, who refused but hung out for 3 hours and watched, and then finally got on the table completely open and ready to have his spine checked.
3) The Quechua village women who all got adjusted and then sat as the rest of the village showed up and helped them understand how to go about the process of getting their spines checked.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 2
4) Checking and adjusting an infant dressed in layers of beautiful wool as he breastfed in his mother’s lap.

Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 46) Being stopped on the road and invited right into someone’s dirt floor home to set up our tables and serve their community because they caught wind that there were chiropractors in our car as we drove by.  Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 5
7) The intense dirt road drive up this mountain along side 500 foot drop offs and not guard rails.
8) The beautiful travel nurse that understands chiropractic care and educates these communities when we show up.  A special shout out to our driver that chose to carry our tables for us, take pictures and help the people understand what we were doing and how to participate.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 8

9) The huge language barrier we were dealing with as neither of us speak Quechuan, but realizing a smile and laughter is a universal language.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 6

10) The roaring laughter as these communities were lit up and a chance to be a small part of their lives.
We have documented our day well and without these pictures, you would never truly be able to grasp the extent of it all. Truly a blessing.
When serving like this, all the “stuff” is stripped away. The documentation, monetary exchange, health insurance coverage, the bills to run an office, the layers and layers of things that are required to run a successful office in the country where we live. And then when you no longer have language to communicate…it becomes raw. It is a  deep look into beautiful stranger”s eyes, a soul to soul connection, a smile and the purest intention to give, love and serve from a deep, abundant well inside of me. It is the most beautiful thing I know of in this entire world.Chiropractor Fenton Michigan 7
